Awards/Reviews

While our small production excludes us from the vast majority of wine show categories, we have picked up a few commendations over the years. Our 1990 Cabernet/Malbec was warmly received by the Sydney Morning Herald in their annual "Reds Ahead" feature and selected among the top 25% of red wines in Australia, regardless of category. Huon Hooke wrote, "...a soft, warm, plummy/minty red...sweet, almost jammy, berry fruit with underplayed oak and a little stalkiness from the malbec." Our 1995 Cabernet/Malbec received a Bronze Medal at the Royal Hobart Wine Show in an open category. Most recently our 1997 Sauvignon Blanc (First Release) was awarded the only medal, a Bronze, for that variety from NSW at the Australian Small Winemakers Show. We shall continue to exhibit whenever we satisfy the rather narrow criteria of wine show categories.

Description

Joadja Vineyards and Winery

Joadja Vineyards and Winery is an exclusive, boutique winery set in the picturesque Southern Highlands. It is the region's oldest vineyard and winery. Here you can talk and taste with the winemakers, tour the winery, walk in the beautiful established vineyards, and sample and buy wines and produce grown in the region. The main vineyard at Joadja Winery is 15 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc.

The Winery

The small winery has a very much "hands on" approach, with some stainless steel and an emphasis on traditional wine making methods. These include minimal intervention, the use of oak fermentation and maturation and first quality fruit. Our cool climate means winemaking at optimal ambient temperatures. Visitors are free to inspect our winemaking and storage facilities at their leisure. Quite often you will find us in the middle of making or bottling wine. If you visit during vintage (typically March to May), you may find yourself in the middle of a hectic crush! Other vineyards at Welby, Sutton Forest and Berrima also supply additional fruit from this region. The Winery is currently designed to crush 100 tonnes of grapes.

The Winemakers

Joadja Vineyards is a family run and operated business. Mr. Kim Moginie is an experienced winemaker of over 20 years. He draws on his extensive experience in wine retailing to develop a distinctive character for the wines of this region.

Frances Moginie is an occupational therapist by profession. She is also the licensee of Joadja Winery and has always taken a keen interest in the character of the wines. More recently she has been researching and experimenting in trellising and pruning techniques. Frances also pursues a keen interest in art. One of her water colours was used as the basis for our distinctive and popular wine label. The many talents of Kim and Frances have combined to develop a high quality family-run small winery.

The Wines

Joadja Vineyards aims to be a little unusual, even somewhat controversial, in the wines it releases. The area is different from other N.S.W. wine regions like the Hunter Valley or Mudgee. Consequently the opportunity exists for a small winery to achieve wines of great interest, quality and distinctiveness. Our emphasis will always be on producing wines with local varietal character and developing styles which suit the vineyard and the fruit from the region.
Small parcels of high quality wines will be released locally, through expanded cellar door sales, and elsewhere. The wines will always be limited, particularly the red wines, which are already much sought after.
