Cellar Door

At Southern Highland Wines we have created a winery and cellar door that is fresh, modern and spacious, where you can savour the moment whilst sampling our award winning cool climate wines and mouth watering chef inspired food.

Southern Highland Wines offers a unique experience for both wine enthusiasts and those just looking for a relaxing and informative enviroment. Meet winemaker Eddy Rossi and enjoy tasting his latest Southern Highland Wines estate releases, wines produced from our best vineyards, along with some special wines only available at the winery.

Our informative staff will explain how wine is made and give you a valuable insight to the wines of the estate, as well as an awareness of the Southern Highlands region and its growing wine industry.

The Vineyard and Winery Tour

Join us at Southern Highlands Wines for a fascinating journey from the vine to the bottle. We will take time to explain how our wines are made. After walking the vineyards, you will have a tour of the winery with its walls of French oak barrels and ten metre high stainless steel fermentation and storage tanks, where you will learn more about the winemaking process. The tour includes an equally informative tutored tasting of the SHW Estate selection. We invite you to enjoy the flavours and delights of the Cellar Door Cafe following your tour.

For all visitors, the guided tour and tasting takes place daily. Group tours (minimum number 4) are also available by prior arrangement.

The Wines

We currently offer four distinct ranges of our cool climate wines of distinction :

SHAW ESTATE
The winemaker has carefully crafted these elegant and complex wines in the Estate range. Individual yet distinctive cool climate regional styles with delicate flavours and fruit characteristics. May be enjoyed now, however, confidently cellar for many years.

The Estate range currently consists of Merlot, Shiraz Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon Chambourcin, Pinot Noir, Shiraz Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Botrytis Chardonnay.

ALTITUDE 676
A selective range of well made fresh fruit driven varietal blends which offer consistently good wine quality. Affordable, 'everyday' drinking style.

The Altitude range currently consists of Shiraz Cabernet,
Cabernet Merlot, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Classic Dry White, Rose.

TRIPLE POINT
The Triple Point range currently consists of:
Shiraz Sangiovese
Sauvignon Blanc Cabernet Sauvignon
Chardonnay Shiraz

THE RED SQUARE
The words “For the People” is our pledge to the wine consumer - an artisan product that will always retail at less than $20. The Red Square range currently consist of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir.

About Us

SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS WINES - VINEYARD AND WINERY
We have some of the finest fruit in Australia to work with. Much the same as a chef working with the freshest and finest ingredients.

The facility at Southern highland Wines is 'state of the art' with all machinery and infrastructure designed to accommodate the special parcels of fruit grown within the Southern Highlands.

Although the area is in its infant stage as far as winemaking is concerned, it has a substantial foot-hold in tourism. This in itself is a great platform to showcase the excellence of winemaking within the area. All in all the three areas go hand in hand; with great fruit, fine facilities and a fabulous tourist destination.”

Winemaking at SHW integrates new world technology and old world artistory to complement the natural flavours and aromas unique to its estate grown grapes. Hand picked and machine harvested grapes are delivered to the winery where the best available equipment is used to produce the outstanding varietal wines of SHW. Musts are pressed in state-of-the-art pneumatic presses to obtain the finest quality juice. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks to control the rate and length of fermentation and to conserve the natural fruit of the grape. Malolatic fermentation softens the wines natural acidity and develops the evolving complexity. The new wines are then designed to their greatest potential through ageing in French and American oak casks. The wines are aged under optimal condidtions to acquire greater maturity before their release to the market.

THE WINEMAKER
Southern Highland Wines talented winemaker Eddy Rossi graduated from Charles Sturt University, whilst studying he was at McWilliam's Wines. In 1987 Eddy moved to Rosetto Wines where he was to become Chief Winemaker a position he held for five years. He has an outstanding palate and has recently become an associate judge on the wine show circuit.

THE SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS AS A COOL CLIMATE WINE GROWING AREA
Australia's cool-climate regions are gaining world-wide pre-eminence. One such region is the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. The wines from this region have distinctive characters, elegance and varietal definition traditionally found in the world's classiest most elegant wines. Emergence of the region has occurred over a short period when recently the Geographical Indications Committee of the Australian Wine Board declared that it was a viticultural region of cool-climate significance. Vines were first planted in the region during the 1870's. It has only been in the last fifteen years that serious plantings have been undertaken again. The region now has sixty vineyards and eight wineries/cellar door.

The Southern Highlands is yet to determine its best varieties, (that's how new it is!) early indications of outstanding wines from chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, riesling, pinot gris, pinot noir, merlot and some notable wines from cabernet sauvignon.

Location

Southern Highland Wines Estate is situated near the delightful village of Sutton Forest on the Illawarra Highway. Our location is a tremendous asset, just over an hour from Sydney and Wollongong and under a leisurely two hours from Canberra. (See map)

The Café

The café situated within the Cellar Door offers creative and affordable modern Australian cuisine with extensive views over a panorama of rolling hills.

The wine list features all currently available vintages of SHW Estate wines by the bottle.

Lunch and Afternoon Tea are available Thursday to Sunday 12 noon to 3.00pm
The Café is not open for Dinner except for private group bookings.

Weddings

Southern Highland Wines appreciates the importance of your wedding day as a beautiful, romantic and elegant occassion.

Imagine your wedding at a venue that encapsulates the magic of the Southern Highlands, the atmosphere of an award winning winery and a service level second to none.

Our experienced event coordinator can advise you on every detail of your wedding with a range of specially tailored wedding packages available.

Flexible to your needs, we have many options you may wish to consider. May we recommend that you visit us for an informal look around, we will be happy to assist in every way.

Drinks reception can be held in the Tasting Room or you may wish to enjoy al fresco pre- dinner drinks in the Home block vineyard before your guests move down to the spectacularly lit Barrel Room for dinner. We can serve a variety of menus from a delightful finger buffet to a delicious three or four course dinner with plated service, accompanied by outstanding wines of the estate.

The winery is also licensed for Civil Ceremonies.

Conferences

Southern Highland Wines offers an ideal venue for your conference or meeting.

With ample parking, set in the tranquility of the vineyard the winery offers a perfect and easily accessible location for your needs.

The recently refurbished Barrel Room is a stylish venue.

Should you require lunch or dinner our inhouse facilities will tailor for your special needs.And of course compliment your dining experience with wines from the estate.
